1824 Old Fashioned
One of the greatest classics for those with a little bit of a sweet tooth is the Old Fashioned cocktail traditionally made with bourbon, sugar, and bitters. There have been many adaptations and during prohibition, this cocktail was pretty much a fruit bowl with some bourbon in it but in more recent times it has been treated with elegance, as it should be. For this variation, however, we used the Angostura 1824® with its underlying vanilla notes disguised by a sweet honey overtone then we added in some ANGOSTURA® orange bitters and a slightly bitter orange marmalade.
With the rich rum and sugars from the orange marmalade playing a part we opted not to include sugar in the cocktail so as to not sweeten it too much. We also used some large ice spheres, which we think look really nice in a rocks glass surrounded by something dark, and then finished with a spritz from the orange zest and dark cherry to give the entire cocktail a great aroma. The ice spheres usually need around 24 hours to freeze sufficiently so throw some of these guys in the freezer whenever you can; you never know when they’re going to come in handy.
