Rum Away With Me

One of the best things about being a home bartender is being able to mix up my own concoctions whenever I want, however I want, without anyone watching my every move and experimenting without any preconceived notions of what is right or wrong. This is how I built Beautiful Booze, making all the “wrong” drinks my way and sharing them with others to show the world that there truly is no wrong way to make a delicious cocktail.

Sure, not everything works but you have to try them all out to know what does and what doesn’t. That’s where this Hibiscus Rum Old Fashioned comes into play, I was at home playing with my cabinet of flavors and just throwing around ideas when I made a Rum Old Fashioned. It wasn’t perfect at first but I realized that the aromatic bitters were conflicting with the hibiscus syrup so I decided to sub them out for less intense bitters and used orange bitters in their place; the cocktail was now delicious!

I wanted to add a little something special so of course, I smoked the cocktail. This wasn’t necessary but the smoke element worked well with the rum and orange bitters. I used applewood, but I bet some good maple wood chips would be great.
